Late Bloomer: Kenny White

After years of contributing to the success of numerous recording artists, urban storyteller extraordinaire Kenny White has finally set sail on a solo career. A master of commercial songwriting and a seasoned studio artist, it wasn't until his late 40s that White decided it was time to step forward from behind the scenes. And we're glad he did.

A natural storyteller, White has developed the ability to express heartaches, happiness and observations with guileless flare. It's refreshing and relatable songwriting because there's an honest maturity to his words. The New York native has something the youth-saturated radio lacks: experience.

Having worked with high-profile recording artists throughout his career (Shawn Colvin, Linda Ronstadt, Dwight Yoakam and Gladys Knight, just to name few), White was able to tap into his colleagues' support for his own musical endeavors. The result was two full-length albums, Uninvited Guest (2002) and his most recent effort, Symphony in 16 Bars (2005).

So, what took him so long to share his well-crafted tunes with the rest of us? We don't know, but it was worth the wait.

Tune into Plum on Saturday, September 1 at 10pm to watch the documentary on Kenny White featuring an exclusive interview and live performances. Get a peek at the trailer below.

What is Plum 98? It¹s a collection of 98 individuals (a nice, round number) who have etched a mark in the Aspen community with positive energy and vision. Be it in the realm of art, recreation or politics, we at Plum want to recognize these local stars for their encouragement and inspiration. To meet more Plum 98ers, click HERE.

Bob Braudis

Aspen wouldn’t be Aspen without Pitkin County sheriff Bob Braudis, who was elected to the position in 1986. Since that time, Braudis earned such a loyal following that Aspenites abolished sheriff term limits in order to keep him in office as long as he is willing. If you’ve ever seen or met Sheriff Bob, you know that Aspen has a true Wild West sheriff with a heart of gold, which is why he is one of our Plum 98.

Farewell to Summer

This is our final week of live programming for the summer here at Plum, and we just can't believe how fast the summer has gone. Of course, in true Aspen style, the summer is ending with an incredible array of events taking place this holiday weekend, starting with the Jazz Aspen Snowmass Labor Day Festival in Snowmass. Some of the festival's headliners include Ben Harper, The Allman Brothers,  John Legend, and Gov't Mule, to name only a few. Another Labor Day staple is the MotherLode Volleyball Classic which will take over parks throughout downtown Aspen. We will be wrapping up our Aspen Homepage show this Thursday, so don't forget to vote for your choice for Dog of the Month (you can vote through the ticker on our homepage www.aspen.plumtv.com). Or, if you've entered your pup, bring him by the gondola before 10 a.m. Thursday, and let people get one more good look at him before the contest is over. This weekend, The MorningNoon&Night Show will feature tons of interviews Friday and Saturday and two special Best of the Summer editions of the show Sunday and Monday. Be sure to tune into Plum for the final days of live morning programming this summer. Of course, we continue 24-hours-a-day programming throughout the off-season, and we will be back with live morning shows this winter as soon as the lifts start running again. Could it already be time to start thinking about powder days?

MotherLode Volleyball Returns

The 35th Annual Crocs MotherLode Volleyball Classic lands in downtown Aspen August 30-September 3. Originally created to spice up an otherwise lackluster Labor Day weekend (this was in the days before the JAS Labor Day Festival), the event has grown to become the most comprehensive beach doubles volleyball tournament in North America. Spectators can watch more than 500 teams, including beach professionals and USA National Team members from all over the country, vie for the bragging rights of championship titles. The winners of selected divisions will also gain guaranteed entry to the 2007 U.S. Open of Beach Volleyball in Huntington Beach, California.

Local Actors Wanted

Calling all actors! It's time to warm up your vocal cords and tap into your dramatic side because Aspen Community Theatre's (ACT) fall auditions are just around the corner. This year's play is She Loves Me, a romantic musical about two European parfumerie clerks in the 1930s who—despite their mutual disdain—unknowingly fall in love with each other through writing letters. After two months of rehearsals, ACT's cast brings this heartwarming performance to the historic Wheeler Opera House stage from November 8 to November 17.

Jeffrey Berkus

When the final building on The Aspen Institute campus was to be constructed, a lot of architects wanted to put their imprint on it. One architect in particular stood out among the masses--Jeffrey Berkus. His vision was not only to make the Doerr-Hosier Center green (it is the only building in the Roaring Fork valley to receive Gold LEED certification) but also a place that encouraged conversation and brought the beauty of the outside in. Berkus' passion for the environment and what The Aspen Institute stands for are why we named him one of our Plum 98.
