The Hotel Jerome

It appears that the chief indicator of economic woes, layoffs, have found their way into the luxury bubble that is Aspen. The Daily News is reporting that the Hotel Jerome (owned by a subsidiary of Vail Resorts) has cut three members of their staff: a chef, a caterer and a front desk clerk.

Aspen Dogs May Get a Sweet New Ride...Public Transportation

Officials of the Aspen City Council and Roaring Fork Transportation Authority are considering a proposal that would allow all dogs, regardless of service capability, to ride on Aspen's buses. The proposal is the brainchild of former councilwoman Georgeann Waggaman, and is aimed at reducing the number of cars on Aspen's streets.

Hard Times Hit Aspen?

It is no secret that the United States is suffering from an economic slowdown and even less of a secret that many Americans are losing their jobs. For most workers there is a looming fear that budgets will become even tighter, corners cut even closer. The New York Times’ article Friday Jobless Rate at 14-Year High After Big October Losses, is a further reminder that job security may be something of the past.

“Employers shed 240,000 more jobs in October, the government reported Friday morning, the 10th consecutive monthly decline and a clear signal that the economic slowdown is troubling households and businesses.

Since August, the economy has lost 651,000 jobs — more than three times as many as were lost from May to July. So far, 1.2 million jobs have been lost this year.”

The numbers are impossible to ignore, cold hard digits that are on a steady decline. It is hard to tell how Aspen, our little bubble that seems so far from the real world, will be affected.

Aspen Daily News reports that employee cutbacks have already hit local companies Related WestPac and Design Workshop. Related, which recently let go a quarter of its employees, has delayed a portion of the Snowmass Base Village project due to a lack of financial backing.

One company that is not slowing down any of their hiring, however, is Aspen Skiing Company, who hosts their annual job fair tomorrow (Nov. 8) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Inn at Aspen in Buttermilk.

As the Daily puts it, “perhaps this could be the year when an out-of-work professional fulfills his or her dream of working on the mountain.”
