Our quaint little Valley will be buzzing with movie mayhem September 26-30. Now in its 29th year, Aspen Filmfest is known for screening top-notch movies from around the world, and this year's festival promises to be no exception. Boasting a wide array of features and documentaries, you won't want to miss the festival opener, Across the Universe, a highly theatrical psychedelic love story set to the music of the Beatles. Also generating a substantial amount of buzz is National Geographic Explorers-in-Residence Dereck and Beverly Joubert's new documentary, Living With Big Cats.Expect great performances from British blokes Michael Caine and Jude Law in Kenneth Branagh's remake of the 1972 classic Sleuth. And don't miss Emile Hirsh's much talked about portrayal of doomed adventurer Christopher McCandless in Sean Penn's adaption of Jon Krakauer's best-selling nonfiction book Into The Wild. In addition to the great movie lineup, Aspen Film will present its Independent by Nature Award at the Wheeler Opera House September 29. The award pays tribute to film artists who embody an individualistic spirit. This year's honoree is Oscar-winning actress Julie Christie, star of such films as Dr. Zhivago, Darling, Shampoo, Hamlet, and her latest film Away From Her. Past recipients include such celluloid heavyweights as Harrison Ford, Michael Douglas, and Anjelica Huston. Screenings are $12 and will take place at the Wheeler Opera House in Aspen as well as the Crystal Theatre in Carbondale and The Springs Theatre in Glenwood Springs.
