Perhaps there are no events in Aspen that say summer quite like the Aspen Music Festival & School. In its 58th year, the classical music festival and school draws the biggest names in classical music as well as the most talented group of young music students in the world to Aspen. The season consists of nine jam-packed weeks of music at several venues (and even random corners) around town. The event started June 21 and runs through August 19, presenting as many as 10 performances a day. This year's festival bears the theme "Blue Notes," exploring jazz's influence on classical music. Some of the highlights of the festival include performances by jazz great Wynton Marsalis, classical-music heavyweights Joshua Bell, Sarah Chang, and Yefim Bronfman, and many more. And don't miss the Aspen Opera Theater Centers' three fully stages operas this season. While concerts take place at several great venues in Aspen, locals have made a summer ritual of heading to the Benedict Music Tent lawn for the Sunday afternoon concert. Bring a book, The New York Times, a bottle of wine, or even a picnic and listen to the tunes float out of the tent. There's little wonder why Sunday afternoons spent with the music festival are an Aspen rite of passage.Summer in Aspen wouldn't be the same without the spectacular sound track the Aspen Music Festival & School provides us throughout the warmer months.
