With Aspen's recent spring-like temperatures and the mountains' opening day less than 48 hours away, it's no wonder why locals are getting restless. But before you panic, take a deep breath, cross your fingers, and pray that the always-unpredictable Colorado weather will surprise us with flurries.
But in case we don't get that much-needed snow storm, know that Aspen Skiing Co. is dealing with Mother Nature the best they can. When the temps get low enough they'll resume snowmaking on Fanny Hill, meaning eager skiers and riders can ski from the Snowmass Mall to the base of the slope (the Skittles Gondola will offer free rides). More man-made snow could also lead to the opening of the midway station on the Village Express lift.
As for Aspen Mountain, SkiCo intends to open either the Silver Bell or 1 & 2 Leaf trails so that locals can make laps on Ajax Express. This decision will however be played by ear, so be sure to check in with Plum for updates.
Regardless of how much terrain Aspen/Snowmass has open this Thanksgiving, catch a free ride on the Silver Queen Gondola to the Sundeck "Beach Club" where tropical drinks will be served all day. Heck, if life gives you warm weather, you might as well enjoy a pink drink with a mini umbrella.
