It wouldn't be summer in the Roaring Fork Valley if downvalley didn't play host to some good, old-fashioned mountain fairs. This weekend, July 27-29, is the Carbondale Mountain Fair, bringing food vendors, arts and crafts, and great music to Sopris Park. This truly authentic Mountain Fair is a throwback to a simpler time with its easy-going vibe and family atmosphere. The theme this year is "Puppet Re-volution, All the Fair's a Stage." You can really get into the spirit by creating your own puppet and bringing it to the festivities. Also new this year, the event promotes environmental consciousness by giving away free bags of garden compost made from last year's Mountain Fair garbage.If you're feeling competitive, pick from a vast array of contests to participate in, ranging from adult limbo and pie contests to hula-hooping and fly-castings comps. With more than 120 artisan booths, Mountain Fair is also a great place to find a unique treasure or gift. Enter the Carbondale Council on Arts and Humanities raffle, and you just might take home the grand prizeāa road bike.You can't talk about Mountain Fair without mentioning the food. Craving funnel cakes? Kettle corn? Chicken naan? A slice of pizza? You name it, Mountain Fair's got it. This year's event features an eclectic and fun lineup, including world-fusion ensemble Bola Abimbola, master percussionist Bones, Austin-based Band of Heathens, rockabilly outfit The Moonlight Cruisers, the Jazz Aspen Youth Band, the Basalt Battle of the Band winners, and many more.
